"Paris Twisted" Digital Print by Philip Hindenach

“Paris twisted” is a digital print on heavy paper stock mounted to birch board with clear topcoat Signed and dated 2006. It is in the tradition of pop art, formalised and popularised by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. In this piece, Hindenach captures the major influences of this movement through the use of some of its emblematic characteristics.

The artwork unfolds in an explosion of vivid colours. Hindenach utilises digital assemblages and collages, prominently featuring the female figure. The cut-outs seem to be straight out of a fashion magazine or snapshots from a television screen. Two black hands are placed at the level of the crotch of the female subject. Do they protect or do they attack? This deliberate choice creates a tension, and prompts a reflection about the notion of identity, visual consumption and the portrayal of women in contemporary society. Hindenach incorporates a “torso female dress maker ” as a backdrop emphasising the thematic connection to the world of fast fashion and the potential interchangeability of models. Additionally, the three-dimensional effect adds a sense of realism to the bust.

The title "Paris Twisted", references Paris, the Capital of fashion but that can be ambiguous in what is not said, not shown, - what we call behind the scenes - adding an other level of critic to the singular visual experience provided by this pop art work.
