This marble sculpture, signed Leon Saulter, dated 1966, presents a stylized human face carved in light-toned stone, ranging from pale cream to soft pink. The coloration subtly recalls the natural tones of human skin.
The sculpture rests on a wooden base and is supported by three slender metal stems, partially enclosed by a semi-circular metal rod that stabilizes the structure and adds a geometric counterpoint to the organic form above.
The front of the face is finely finished, with cleanly defined features—shaped eyes, a smooth nose, and expressive lips—while the reverse remains rough and unpolished. This contrast between the two sides introduces a subtle tension, suggesting a reflection on what is revealed and what remains hidden.
Overall, the work combines refined craftsmanship with thoughtful composition, inviting quiet contemplation of form, texture, and duality.
Born in Poland on March 31, 1908. By the 1930s, Saulter was active on the Federal Art Project while residing in Los Angeles. He died there on Sept. 24, 1986.
